Mission

Through the use of Social and Restorative Justice principles, Five Keys provides traditionally underserved communities the opportunity to restart their education with a focus on the Five Keys: EDUCATION, EMPLOYMENT, RECOVERY, FAMILY, AND COMMUNITY.

History

Originally established by the SF Sheriff’s Department (2003) as the first charter school in the nation to operate inside of a county jail, today Five Keys is a charter management (non-profit) corporation that operates three public charter schools within the Sheriff's Department, the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, and 26 community satellite campuses in partnership with the reentry and workforce development community in SF and LA.

Additionally, through contracts with the San Francisco Mayor's office of Economic and Workforce Development, Five Keys coordinates the education needs of the SF Workforce Development community. Through a contract with the Los Angeles Sheriff's Dept. Five Keys provides all the career technical educational and life skills programs for inmates in the LA county jails.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Substitute Teacher will provide instruction to students in various locations.  Educational areas include, and is not limited to, math, computer skills, workplace reading and writing, and other high school completion programs and basic skills needed for access to jobs and employment training programs.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan, prepare, follow, and present lessons effectively
  • Responsible for student academic growth and development in meeting student academic needs by providing appropriate and approved instruction
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to various family and cultural patterns in planning and monitoring classroom activities
  • Maintain a climate conducive to student learning
  • Maintain classroom discipline and apply classroom management strategies
  • Develop and maintain open channels of communication between students and staff
  • Keep records that meet the needs of the students and teachers
  • Maintain professional and orderly classroom environment
  • Collaborate with internal and Sheriff’s Department staff to provide effective learning activities for students
  • Responsible for continuous supervision of students in the classroom throughout the day and report any incidents to Five Keys management staff, and correctional officers as appropriate
  • Supervise students in out-of-classroom activities during assigned work-time, and accept responsibility for maintaining behavior standards school-wide
  • Maintain  standards  of  student  behavior  needed  to  achieve  a  desirable  safe  learning environment in and out of the classroom
  • Provide  a  classroom  climate  and  learning  experience  that  supports  the  emotional, physical, social, and mental development of the student
  • Act as a roving substitute to cover classrooms as assigned or directed
  • May be asked to cover one-quarter, half-day, or three-quarter day assignments, as needed
  • May be required to perform period supervision, or cover vacant assignments as needed during the instructional day
  • Abide by Sheriff’s Department and Five Keys policies and procedures
  • Assist regular personnel as needed
  • Perform administrative duties as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Frequent and prolonged standing, walking, and sitting
  • Frequent talking and hearing conversations
  • Occasional reaching with hands and arms
  • Occasionally lifting up to 25 pounds
  • Ability to follow oral directions in emergency situations
  • Travel to multiple sites required
  • Clear TB test results dated within 60 days of hire to be submitted within 10 days of hire required

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Must be willing and able to work in a correctional facility and travel throughout the area to community sites, including passing a background check for jail clearance
  • Work environment varies from site to site. There is some personal safety risk working with the at-risk population
  • Moderate noise level

Experience and Skills:

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
  • Read, write, and speak English fluently
  • Understanding of or willingness to learn restorative justice practices
  • Awareness of the Five Keys student population and the best ways to serve them
  • Ability to maintain strong and appropriate boundaries with personal identifying information when interacting with students or community or program partners, and while at any school location or community or program partner site
  • Exceptional written communication skills; ability to express complex ideas with clarity and precision in written documents
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Eagerness to learn new things and adapt to constantly changing circumstances
  • Ability to handle multiple deadlines and tasks simultaneously
  • Advanced problem-solving skills; tactfully address and resolve questions/concerns
EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE
  • Possession of current and valid Emergency 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit or Preliminary Adult Education Teaching Credential preferred
  • Successful completion of the CBEST
  • Teaching experience preferred
