Mission

Through the use of Social and Restorative Justice Principles, Five Keys provides traditionally underserved communities the opportunity to restart their education with a focus on the Five Keys: EDUCATION, EMPLOYMENT, RECOVERY, FAMILY, AND COMMUNITY.

History

Originally established by the SF Sheriff’s Department (2003) as the first charter school in the nation to operate inside of a county jail, today Five Keys is a nationally recognized education management (non-profit) corporation that operates accredited charter schools and programs for TAY youth and adults at 70 locations across California.

Five Keys operates with the goal of restoring communities through education and other programs that respond to the students’ and community needs---which in turn creates safer communities. Five Keys provides a range of educational programs and services including: high school diploma, career and technical education, digital literacy, ESL, cognitive behavioral, recovery programs, case management, correctional education consulting and college access to transitional aged youth and adults in six California counties.

POSITION SUMMARY

The School Based Mental Health is responsible for providing direct Mental Health services to students ranging from the ages of 16-22 that under IDEA. This person will be responsible providing Individual Counseling and Counseling and Guidance services to special education students. This person will also be an active participant of the student's IEP meeting including development of goals and objectives, implementation of the IEP goals and data collection on progress.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide individual counseling services to students to emphasize improved educational performance and/or conduct.
  • Participates as a member of the multi-disciplinary team and the Individualized Education Program (IEP) committee collaborating on the student’s educational plan including writing goals and objectives, reporting on present levels of performance and updating staff on goal progress.
  • Provides collaborative consultation and documentation of results including assisting educational staff with suggestions for implementation of RTI, pre-referral intervention strategies, and providing recommendations and modifications to the curriculum to assist the educational team when working with special education students in the educational setting.
  • Consults with teachers and other school staff regarding the student‘s program and any adaptations/materials needed to facilitate improved performance in the classroom or home environment to attain educational benefit.
  • Maintains appropriate data on students to document present levels of performance and other pertinent information. Complete informal assessments as appropriate, to determine extent of progress and effectiveness of therapy.
  • Establishes and monitors the necessary caseloads, procedures, and resources to manage mental health services for students/staff and work cooperatively to accomplish the goals of the IEP
  • Adheres to the ethical standards and codes of the profession and to the established rules, regulations, and laws governing special education programs. Participate in activities that promote professional development and use clinical/educational research to enhance therapy services.
  • Supports and implements the LEA’s policies, regulations, procedures, and administrative directives.
  • Supports and follows the policies and procedures of Five Keys Charter Schools and Programs
  • Submits records, reports, and assignments promptly (within legal timelines) and efficiently
  • Demonstrates ability to adjust to and use new approaches in the performance of his/her duties
  • Seeks and takes advantage of opportunities for professional growth
  • Adheres to the Five Keys Schools and Programs dress code policies
  • Abides by Five Keys and Sheriff’s Department policies and procedures
  • Creates and maintains a data collection system that is organized and updated weekly or as appropriate.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Experience with understanding of how educational barriers affect work and training for students in the program

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE

This position typically requires:

  • Candidate must qualify as one of the following: A Licensed Psychologist, Educational Psychologist, School Psychologist PPS, School Counselor PPS, Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) , Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) or possess PPS Credential which authorizes school counseling or school psychology.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Frequent and prolonged standing, walking, and sitting
  • Frequent talking and hearing conversations
  • Occasional reaching with hands and arms
  • Occasionally lifting up to 25 pounds
  • Ability to follow oral directions in emergency situations
  • Travel to multiple sites required
  • Clear TB Risk Assessment (or results, as needed) dated within 60 days of hire to be submitted within 10 days of hire required
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Must be willing and able to work in a correctional facility and travel throughout the area to community sites
  • Work environment varies from site to site. There is some personal safety risk working with the at-risk population
  • Moderate noise level
